What is RED-S?

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) happens when the energy you take in through food does not meet the demands of your training and everyday body functions. This low energy availability can affect menstrual function, bone health, metabolism, immune function, cardiovascular health, psychological wellbeing and performance.

RED-S can affect any active person, whatever their age, gender or sport. It is common but often overlooked, and if it is not addressed it can increase injury risk and affect long-term health and performance. Chronic under-fuelling is a serious athlete-health concern, not a sign of dedication.

Our specialist dietitians and practitioners support people with suspected or diagnosed RED-S through personalised, evidence-based nutrition care, delivered online. Where symptoms suggest hormonal, bone-health or other medical complications, we recommend medical assessment and work alongside your GP, sports physician and wider healthcare team.

How our RED-S support works

Recovery from RED-S usually needs ongoing monitoring rather than a single appointment.

An individualised strategy to restore energy availability while supporting training, recovery, hormonal health and bone health.

  • Fuelling before, during and after training

  • Meal and snack timing

  • Energy, fatigue and training tolerance

  • Menstrual or hormonal changes

  • Gut symptoms, injury and bone health

  • Check-in questionnaires and food diary

05

Questions

I am not sure if I have RED-S. Should I still book?

Yes. If you are unsure whether you have RED-S or may be at risk, the first step is an initial consultation. Your practitioner will assess your energy availability, training demands, symptoms and health history, and advise on the most appropriate next steps.

What are common signs of RED-S?

Common signs include persistent tiredness even on rest days, a plateau or drop in performance, frequent injuries or stress fractures, slow recovery, getting ill more often, mood changes, irregular or missing periods in female athletes, and low testosterone in male athletes. These symptoms can have other causes, which is why proper assessment matters.

Can you diagnose RED-S?

We provide specialist nutritional assessment and support for low energy availability and RED-S. Where symptoms suggest hormonal, bone-health, cardiovascular or other medical complications, we recommend medical assessment, for example with your GP or a sports physician, and can work alongside them.

How much does RED-S support cost?

The initial consultation (60 minutes, self-pay) is £159. An individualised nutrition plan, where clinically indicated, is £75, and follow-up consultations (45 minutes) are £89. Follow-up packages of 4, 6, 9 or 12 sessions are available at £79 per 25-minute session or £89 per 45-minute session.

Does RED-S only affect female athletes?

No. RED-S can affect anyone who is active, regardless of age, gender or sport. In male athletes it may show up as low testosterone, fatigue or loss of strength, as well as injury and performance changes.
