PCOS has a new name: PMOS
In May 2026, an international consensus renamed polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). The new name reflects that the condition affects hormones and metabolism across the body, not only the ovaries. You may still see PCOS used, and both names describe the same condition.
PMOS can affect periods, fertility, skin and hair, mood and long-term risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Insulin resistance is common, whatever your body size.
The International Evidence-based Guideline for PCOS recommends healthy lifestyle support as part of care for everyone with the condition. A dietitian helps you build a sustainable eating pattern, alongside the medical care from your GP or specialist.

Questions
Is PMOS the same as PCOS?
Yes. PMOS is the new name for PCOS, announced in May 2026. Both names describe the same condition.
Is there a special PMOS diet?
There is no single PMOS diet. The best approach is a balanced, sustainable eating pattern tailored to your needs, symptoms and goals.
Do I have to lose weight?
Not necessarily. Many changes that help insulin resistance and symptoms are worthwhile at any body size. We do not use rigid diets.
Should I take supplements such as inositol?
Evidence for supplements is mixed. We review this with you based on current evidence and your medical care.
Are consultations online?
Yes. All consultations are by secure video, across the UK.
