Understanding pollen food allergy syndrome

Oral allergy syndrome, also called pollen food allergy syndrome, affects people with hay fever. Proteins in some raw fruits, vegetables and nuts look similar to pollen, so the immune system reacts, usually causing itching or tingling of the lips, mouth or throat.

Symptoms are usually mild and short-lived, and cooking often breaks down the proteins responsible. Occasionally reactions are more severe, particularly with some nuts, so a medical assessment is important.

Diagnosis should be made by a doctor or allergy specialist. A dietitian helps you work out which foods to avoid, which forms you can still eat, and how to keep your diet varied and nutritious.

Questions

Can I still eat foods that trigger my symptoms?

Often, yes, in cooked or processed forms, because cooking breaks down the proteins involved. We tailor this to your medical advice.

Is oral allergy syndrome dangerous?

It is usually mild, but some people have more severe reactions, especially to nuts. Always follow the advice of your doctor or allergy specialist.

Will my symptoms be worse in pollen season?

Many people notice symptoms are worse when pollen counts are high.

What should I do in a severe reaction?

If you have breathing difficulty or throat swelling, use your adrenaline auto-injector if prescribed and call 999.

Are consultations online?

Yes. All consultations are by secure video, across the UK.
