Living well with cow's milk allergy
Cow's milk allergy is an immune reaction to the proteins in milk. It is different from lactose intolerance, which is a problem digesting milk sugar. Reactions can be immediate (IgE-mediated), with symptoms such as hives, swelling or breathing difficulty, or delayed, with mainly gut or skin symptoms.
Diagnosis should be made by a doctor or allergy specialist, based on your history and, where appropriate, tests such as skin prick or specific IgE blood tests. We do not diagnose allergies or use unvalidated intolerance tests.
Once a diagnosis is made, a dietitian helps you avoid milk safely, read labels, choose suitable alternatives and meet your needs for calcium, iodine, vitamin B12 and protein.

Questions
What is the difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance?
Milk allergy is an immune reaction to milk protein and can be serious. Lactose intolerance is difficulty digesting milk sugar and causes gut symptoms. They are managed differently.
Can a dietitian diagnose milk allergy?
No. Diagnosis should come from a doctor or allergy specialist. We support you with managing your diet once you have a diagnosis, or help you work out whether you need referral.
Are lactose-free products safe with milk allergy?
No. Lactose-free products still contain milk protein, so they are not suitable for people with milk allergy.
What should I do in a severe reaction?
If you have signs of anaphylaxis, such as breathing difficulty or throat swelling, use your adrenaline auto-injector if you have one and call 999.
Are consultations online?
Yes. All consultations are by secure video, across the UK.
